The Fundacio Catalunya Europa will host on 26th March the presentation of the book Immigration and the Welfare State in Europe, a work resulting from the Pasqual Maragall Legacy Award. The event will take place at 18:30 at the Espai Assemblea of CCOO (Via Laietana, Barcelona), in collaboration with CCOO and the Fundació Cipriano Garcia. Prior registration is required.
Written by Francesc Amat and César Fuster, the book analyses the impact of immigration on the welfare state in Europe and investigates the factors that shape citizens’ willingness to extend social rights to immigrants. Through experimental analyses conducted in Spain, France, and the United Kingdom, the authors examine how the perception of fiscal contributions influences attitudes towards expanding these rights and how economic inequalities can perpetuate the lack of public support for migrant communities.
To discuss the book’s findings and implications, a roundtable discussion will be held, moderated by Marc Andreu from the Fundació Cipriano Garcia - CCOO, featuring:
- Francesc Amat, researcher and Ramon y Cajal professor at the University of Barcelona, where he serves as Deputy Director of the Research Group on Institutions and Political Economy (IPERG). Holding a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oxford, he has published in various international academic journals.
- César Fuster, PhD candidate at the University of Oxford, specialising in perceptions of economic inequality and support for redistributive policies. He graduated in Political Science and Law from the University of Valencia, receiving the Extraordinary Award in both degrees.
- Eva Anduiza, professor of Political Science at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and ICREA Academia researcher. She has been the coordinator of the Research Group on Democracy, Elections, and Citizenship and the Master's Programme in Political Science at the UAB. She has conducted research stays at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and coordinates the Spanish Political Attitudes Panel (POLAT). She is also a trustee of the Catalunya Europa Foundation.
- Liliana Reyes, Secretary of New Realities of Work, Territory, and Migration at CCOO of Catalonia. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla and a Master’s in Social Policy, Work, and Welfare from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She is a member of the Research Group on Immigration and Ethnic Minorities (GEDIME) at the UAB and actively participates in migrant and feminist associations.
This public event aims to provide a space for reflection on economic inequalities and their connection to support for immigrants’ social rights within the framework of the European welfare state.
